    3 Step Vocabulary for Chapter 1 Terms

    Aquifer- p. 13- an underground reservoir that forms when freshwater becomes trapped between two layers of sediment.

    Ecosystem:  p. 14- a community of living things that interact with and depend upon each other in a certain environment.

    Natural resource:  p. 16- a material that has economic value in its natural state, such as timber, fresh water, minerals, or fertile land

    Sustainable:  p. 16- methods of harvesting natural materials that do not use up or destroy their supply

    Deforestation:  p. 19- the rapid loss of all of the trees in an area due to widespread logging, also called clear-cutting.

    Latitude: p. 20- the distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees

    Longitude:  p. 20- the distance east or west of your prime meridian, measured in degrees
