English Language Learners
English as a Second Language
English Language Learners (ELLs):
English language learners are students identified by the State Board of Education as not proficient in the English language based on the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA21). ELPA21 is a federally mandated test administered each spring that measures listening comprehension, oral language development, and reading and writing proficiency.
Lonoke’s ESL Program:
English as a Second Language (ESL) provides instruction for students who do not speak English or who need additional support to succeed in the classroom. Our district is currently serving 95 ELLs in Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Lonoke School District employs a District ESL Coordinator, District ESL Facilitator, ESL-endorsed teachers, and bilingual paraprofessionals on each campus. These staff members support students in developing communication skills and academic language proficiency to ensure success in school and mastery of the English language.
The ESL Department stays current on scientifically based research pertaining to ELLs by attending local, state, and national conferences. Whenever possible, we also involve classroom teachers in this training so they can apply effective methods and strategies with ELLs in their own classrooms.
